One can find numerous contenders for the title of “planet’s most significant innovation.” The wheel. The printing press. The steam engine.
According to a new book, though, that title belongs to the automated sawmill invented by Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.
“Before automated cutting, building a modest trading ship necessitated around 10 lumberjacks laboring over 90 days,” writes the author. “With wind-powered lumber mills, an identical amount of cut lumber might be manufactured in less than seven days.”
Owing to this rapid automated cutter, which turned logs into boards using almost no manual labor, Dutch builders could build vessels faster compared to anyone else, which unleashed one hundred years of Netherlands maritime, financial and cultural supremacy in Europe and the globe.

Corneliszoon’s lumber mill, argues the writer, represented “humanity’s first authentic industrial machine.” A windmill turned a wheel.
