The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.
The ex-president was found guilty of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in jail, but he remained under home detention pending court reviews.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" came to light.
This included trying to remove his ankle monitor and a invitation to a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".
Court Filing Details Escape Risks
In a document approving the detention, the magistrate said information from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his getaway".
This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his offspring.
His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a legislator, called for a gathering of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or observe everything from your phone there on your settee? I call on you to struggle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so supporters could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the possibility of his "relocation to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a history of arranging to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.
The legal document underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.
Worldwide Consequences
His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist United States President Donald Trump, leading him to impose a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.
He is being kept in a national police facility in the capital and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on the following day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with tracking devices.
They also asked that the former president be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he demanded regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other health problems.
Background on Conviction
The former president was determined responsible of heading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, President Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plot which involved plans to assassinate the current president and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing the former president's case.
The plot was thwarted because it failed to get the endorsement of the military leaders. The current president was took office without issue on the first day of 2023.
But a week later, on the eighth of January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised public facilities in the federal district, the capital city.
The security forces stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.
The justices found that the demonstrators had been provoked by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to step in, bring back stability and bring him back to power.
At the time, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.
He was also barred from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The former president called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
