Just as the recent storm swept through the northwest the night before, the home side overwhelmed the visitors away at the their home ground. It was a convincing 3-0 win for Andrée Jeglertz’s side thanks to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a result that firmly established their championship potential as they consolidated their place at the WSL pinnacle.

Back-to-Back Defeats for United

This result marked consecutive WSL setbacks for the United manager's side for the first time since last May, placing them a significant margin off the league leaders with their trophy ambitions hanging by a thread.

The Red Devils' capacity to balance domestic and continental football with a limited roster has been a hotly discussed topic since they qualified for the European competition. Reviewing the calendar, it always appeared this was the matchday that would fully examine this capability. Sadly for the visitors, they seemed tired from start to finish, the memorable win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having taken a toll.

Tactical Shifts

Marc Skinner had tried to make changes with a several changes. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Dominique Janssen and Galton all provided vigor, although the dropping of the on-form Melvine Malard to the bench caused surprise.

Overpowering Start

After the Break

The most obvious adjustment came from Skinner at the interval as Malard was introduced for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was too late to shift the momentum of the game. Former City player Park came most likely to score, rattling the upright, but the away team were lacking in ideas and did not manage to produce a one shot on target.

The hosts, meanwhile, could have increased their lead when a delightful Miedema pass sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it did not affect the result to the hosts. Previously unable to defeat any side who finished above them in the prior term, City's side now have successes against Arsenal and Manchester United to position them in a favorable standing after the opening fixtures.
