Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Major Alliance Formed By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The late summer revolt was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Discussions Taking Place

In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of leading political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
