During an first day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” New York City, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an bold beginning to his tenure.

A Groundbreaking Mayor

The 34-year-old figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring advice to be modest, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will govern with courage and vision.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Principles

Mamdani did not shy away from his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my principles for fear of being called radical,” he said to rapturous applause.

The ceremony was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.

A Costly Blueprint

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Universal childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these services may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the city's top earners and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Dynamics

The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has moved to ease these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly friendly.

The Core Tests of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing basic services: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, repairing potholes, and ensuring smooth subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing record low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
